Top Five Reason Insulation Helps Save Energy and Saves You Money!

1. How can I save Energy?
Homes and buildings that are properly insulated are considered energy efficient because less energy is required in order to keep the building at a comfortable temperature. A reduction in energy consumption results in less greenhouse gases being released into the environment. Gases such as CO2 and NOx are linked to global warming and pollution. Properly insulating a building helps to reduce these emissions.

2. How can I REDUCE My UTILITY BILLS BY 20-50%!
Spray Foam can save you around 50% on your monthly utility bills. Traditional environmentally friendly products such as cellulose can save you up to 20% on your monthly utility bills. Upgrading your insulation pays for itself and then continues to provide you with energy savings.

3. Do I have ENOUGH Insulation?

According to Harvard School of Public Health, if you have a home built in the last five to ten years, it is most likely one of 46 million homes that are under-insulated in the U.S. One quick way to determine if you need more is to look across the span of your attic. If your insulation is just level with or below your floor joists (i.e., you can easily see your joists), you should add more. But even if you can’t see your beams or studs, that’s still no guarantee that you have enough insulation. The best thing to do is have a qualified contractor evaluate your insulation. Also if you have a crawl space under your ground floor and your insulation is loose, falling out or on the ground, it’s not providing any energy savings.

4. How can I REDUCE MY CARBON FOOTPRINT?

As you lower your utility bills by adding insulation, you reduce your emissions of CO2 and other pollutants from fossil fuels. If you also choose insulation made from recycled materials, you'll make an even bigger contribution because recycled products require less energy to manufactureand they keep reusable resources out of landfills and incinerators. We carry several products that are made from both recycled and renewable content.

5. How do I MAKE MY INSULATION COUNT?
Too often, insulation isn’t properly installed. Fiberglass batt insulation that is compressed, or miss-shaped will not provide energy saving. Sometimes loose-fill insulation doesn’t reach all the corners, and gaps are left around pipes and other obstacles. Poor-quality installation can lower the material’s effectiveness by as much as 30%–and that means money and energy down the drain, not to mention uncomfortable spots in your home.

Quick Summary of Unvented Attic Assembly

Unvented attics are beneficial for many reasons.  First and most importantly by helping to seal the building system, which in return allows the central air conditioning system to operate more efficiently and effectively- removing moisture and reducing temperature. By placing the duct work in a climate controlled space, the dehumidified air from  duct work and interior of home has less opportunity to create condensation as temperate difference of interior of home and attic space will not differ by large amounts.  By sealing the building system you can prolong the life of your properly sized HVAC as well as prevent outside allergens and pollutants from entering your home.  Homes with properly sealed building system also benefit greatly on energy  savings for life of the home.

Why Remove the Old Insulation?

Insulation that exists on the floor of the attic ceiling and any vapor retarder on the floor of the ceiling should be removed to allow for heat and moisture transfer through the ceiling. This is how the unvented attic space becomes indirectly conditioned space and the temperature and humidity in the attic can be controlled. By removing the existing insulation on the ceiling of the attic, you can be ensured that the unvented attic will provide the energy performance     improvements intended by your insulation upgrade.

Insulation for Energy Conservation

Properly installed insulation can reduce your energy use by 20-50% depending on insulation product selected.

Insulation saves over 600 times more energy each year than all of the compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), Energy Star Appliances, and Energy Star windows combined.

In residential and commercial buildings, energy efficiency through insulation is the simplest and most cost effective way to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.

Typically, min. of 40% of the average family’s utility bill goes to keeping homes at a comfortable temperature.  The energy sources that power these heating and cooling  systems emit more than 500 million tons of carbon dioxide and 12% of the nitrogen oxide emissions, the active components in acid rain.  By combining proper equipment maintenance and use, insulation & insulation upgrades,  and weatherization, you can reduce your energy bills and emissions by half.

All insulation products currently installed in U.S. buildings save consumers about 12 quadrillion Btus annually, or about 42% of the energy that would have been consumed with no insulation in place.
  • This is the equivalent of 40 million Btus or 7 barrels of oil per person per year.
  • This is the equivalent of 28 barrels of oil saved by each U.S. family of four per year.

To-date it is estimated 60% of Americans homes are inefficiently insulated. Imagine the impact if the statistics would switch

In addition to energy saving benefits, spray foam insulation & cellulose are both made from recycled content.  In addition to the renewable content– 1,000 recycled plastic bottles are used in each set of spray foam material.  Cellulose is made from recycled newspapers, magazines, and cloths.

5 Small Ways to Make a Big Difference in Your Energy Savings

1. Replace your air filter or clean your filter area depending on your system. This not only helps save energy, but also prolongs the life of your system and provides a healthier indoor environment.

2. Replace old light bulbs throughout your home with CFLs.  If every American home replaced just one light with a light that's earned the ENERGY STAR, we would save enough energy to light 3 million homes for a year, save about $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent 9 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year, equivalent to those from about 800,000 cars.

3. Turn off & unplug all appliances & electronics when not in use.

4. Get a yearly checkup for your home air system/ HVAC. Duct leaks, incorrect settings, and inefficient systems can easily increase your bill by 15%.

5. Fix your insulation situation! Upgrade your insulation and seal around windows, doors, and other outside air leaks.  Click or call today for a free estimate & consultation for insulation upgrade & home seal from Gulf Coast Insulation http://www.gulfcoastinsulation.com or (850) 685-9709.
